Here’s a list of ads for anyone who couldn’t find the time to see this year's Super Bowl spots all and has to stand clueless when the topic comes up.
I had an urge to cover all of them so, I just separated them into categories so you can pick the ones that interest you.
Must see ones (3)
It's completely ‘OK’ if you missed these (4)
The ones who didn’t fulfil expectations (2)
The influencers (2)
The ones that tricked the viewers (2)
Must see ones:
1) Avocados from Mexico - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VneoEvAJX0g
I love this ad. It takes the viewers on some kind of a journey into the occult.
We’ve got a secret society that runs the world and is concerned about leaks of information to the public. The conversation escalates quickly to cover a range of classic conspiracy theories like fake moon landing, Bigfoot, Area 51 and finally taking a jab by dropping the deflategate joke* subtly making it perfect for Super Bowl.
*Society member: Did they figure out we deflated the footballs?
Society leader: No, we found a fall guy for that one.
The second best part is when the leak is discovered.
The third best is when everyone realises they’re victims of subliminal advertising for, Avocados from Mexico.
2) Mr Clean - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GDzMxlw2Fgo
All I’d like to say that this ad is an eye candy for the ladies (and for the guys) and so a must watch. There’s some really high-quality, computer-animated muscle definition involved.
Here Mr Clean is hoping that sex sells. As the commercial ends, we realise the real Mr. Clean was there all along, inside of her husband. It’s the cleaning that really did the trick. In the end the ad reads, “You gotta love a man who cleans.”
3) Skittles - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f8X8Ygy5VjI
(I’d recommend watching just because how much we love skittles in the agency.)
The romantic cliché of tossing a pebble at a girl’s window in the middle of the night has a new rule: Don’t use Skittles.
You guessed it, the skittles are eaten by all the others in the house including a burglar, a policeman and an otter. “Romance the rainbow, taste the rainbow.”
Nice idea, riding on the ongoing campaign but not creative/ engaging enough to create a stir/ dialogue.
The influencers:
In this ad father watches his daughter cart race and wonders how he could ever tell her the world doesn’t value women the same as men.
There’s the immediate issue of such a statement, about equality, but especially one on the value of a woman, coming from a male perspective, even if it’s from her father. Audi has taken the brave stance of questioning why such a silly idea, that a woman is not equal to a man, exists in our society. It asks why such contempt and degradation should be commonplace.
2) Airbnb - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yetFk7QoSck
Its a simple, clear 30 sec ad sends out a strong message that it has chosen it’s side on Trumpism. It shows close up shots of various non-white people’s faces with the copy saying “We believe no matter who you are, where you’re from, who you love, or who you worship, we all belong. The world is more beautiful the more you accept.”
Perviously on Twitter, CEO Brain Chesky tweeted “Airbnb is providing free housing to refugees and anyone not allowed in the US. Stayed tuned for more, contact me if urgent need for housing.”
The ones that tricked the viewers:
Terry Bradshaw co-host of Super Bowl, showed up with a huge red stain on his shirt stain on what appeared to be live TV from the Fox broadcast booth. Cut to a him trying to get home and washing his shirt with Tide.
2) Snickers - http://adage.com/article/special-report-super-bowl/snickers-extends-live-super-bowl-campaign-apology-offer/307867/
Snickers did a live commercial where everything went wrong. (on purpose) Last frame said, you ruin live Super Bowl commercials when you’re hungry.
The ones who didn’t fulfil expectations:
1) Budweiser - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HtBZvl7dIu4
Budweiser presents a nicely crafted story of Adolphus Busch (co-founder) who to came to America from Germany with the dream brewing a great beer. The closing frame reads “When nothing stops your dream, this is the beer we drink.”
It seems like it’s trying to ride the wave of the ongoing events (immigration order by Trump in US) but fun fact - the commercial was made months in advance and was release on 31st Jan (5 days before Super bowl L1).
2) Coca cola - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LhP5sDUnF6c
Coca cola showed it’s commercial originally form 2014 which was “America the Beautiful” sung in multiple languages, again. It’s beautifully crafted, feel good do good spot, not really trying to be ambitious at all.
It still got a reaction from people who think only English should be spoken took to twitter with #BoycottCoke. Good publicity is good publicity but bad publicity is also good publicity right? (Especially if it’s saying something positive)
Its completely ‘OK’ if you missed these:
1) TurboTax - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgh6K1TXw28
It’s a tale of Humpty Dumpty falling off the wall while doing his taxes on his phone and smashes to pieces. This makes sensational news and everyone is asking why he was doing his taxes to which he replies, “because you can”. It gets the message across that it’s super easy to do your taxes from your phone itself. Seriously? I think Founded should come up with better way to get this across.
(The realistic face struggling to stay conscious and vomiting yolk is a little jarring and gross.)
Set to Chicago's classic song "You're The Inspiration," the commercial shows the adorable toddlers as the legendary players like football legends such as Mike Ditka, Joe Namath, Von Miller, and New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick.
"Super Bowl legends inspire Super Bowl babies," the ad's text reads. It's a sweet reminder that the children are indeed the future — including on the football field.
It's cute but not my favourite.
3) T-Mobile - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kg_4tX4XwI8
Justin Bieber is a celebration expert, and he joined Terrell Owens and Gronk to take us through the history of touchdown dances, each one getting longer than before. We’re left with some “unlimited” dancing in the end interrupted by - Say goodbye to limits (advertising their unlimited data). In the end, JB asks everyone to post their #unlimited moves.
In this ad, a parent points out a car to another parent sitting to watch their kids’ football game. He says if that’s a Buick, then my kid is Cam Newton cut to the kid magically turning into Cam. (Later that happens to the coach who turns into Miranda Kerr.)
Je suis désolé if I missed out any major ones! Now you're all ready to have long debates about your views on Super Bowl ads this year.
